The northernmost of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is known for its volcanoes which have formed the island into a wonder of lava fields, strangely shaped rock and black earth. Contrast this with the whitewashed buildings, golden sand beaches and deep blue sea it possesses and you’ve got somewhere truly unique. In this article we’ll go through what makes Lanzarote a perfect holiday destination the whole year round and why it should be your first call for winter or summer sun. The WeatherThe most important aspect of what makes Lanzarote a year round destination is it's weather. Whilst it is the northernmost of the Canary Islands, it still averages in the late teens or early twenties Celsius throughout the winter months. With an average of 6 hours of sunshine a day in December, there is plenty of time for outdoor activities. Beaches, Beaches and more BeachesIf you’re going for sun, you want some good beaches, and Lanzarote has that in abundance. Many of the island’s beaches are great for children as well as adults as they are naturally protected from waves and currents. This is due to them being formed from lava flows long ago and have created pools that reached down as far as the sea. With so many beaches there’s something for everyone whether you’re looking for long walks, busy beaches with a lot going on or a quiet spot you can sit and read a book. Most of the best beaches are on the east coast from Costa Teguise down to Puerto del Carmen or in the Playa Blanco area. Our favourites are: - Playa del Papagayo - In a small inlet in the southeast with a lovely curve and clear turquoise waters - Playa de Famara – At the bottom of some impressive cliffs in the northwest of the island, its known for its pale golden sand which stretches over 5km A Home of SustainabilityLanzarote has been developed sustainably so that it be a top tier tourist destination without impacting the island's beauty, so much so that it is the first destination in the world to have received the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate. Much of this has been due to artist Cesar Manrique who’s influence and buildings can be seen across the island as art, nature and architecture blends seamlessly together. Leave the ResortThe beautiful weather of Lanzarote means that its perfect to get out and explore outside your resort with plenty of activities to do and places to visit. Timanfaya National Park is one such place, more reminiscent of the landscape of Mars than Earth, this volcanic wonderland is a sight to behold. So as not to disturb the environmental quality of the park, only certain places can be visited. There are plenty of trekking routes around the volcanoes, you can explore some of the wonderful flora there or search for scientific knowledge in the Mancha Blanca centre. There are sports aplenty to take part in whether it be running, cycling, golf or any number of water sports, all are available at many locations across the island. Enjoy the CuisineThe food in the Canary Islands is a fusion of many flavours with an emphasis on quality, local ingredients to create something wonderful. The great weather of the islands means they are perfect for growing fruit and vegetables and this is highlighted in the food eaten and created. Crops particular to Lanzarote include sweet potatoes, squash, onions and legumes. In recent times Lanzarote has undergone somewhat of a cultural revolution when it comes to food, encouraging and seeing a rise in food tourism. In Teguise they hold a festival called ‘Saborea Lanzarote’ highlighting the produce and food of the island. Along with the food, Lanzarote has always been known for its wine thanks to its fertile volcanic soil. The landscape of La Geria is known for growing grapes that produce high quality white wines and doing so in a method unique to the area, with vines placed in man made impressions in the ground and surrounded by stone walls in semi circular patterns which protect the plants from the island's winds.
