Anguilla is a small island in the Eastern Caribbean that is a British Overseas Territory. Unlike many Caribbean islands it remains relatively uncommercial and its beautiful white sand beaches are often deserted leaving you to feel as though you have the entire island to yourself. The handful of hotels and resorts that are on the island are ranked amongst some of the best in the Caribbean. So come with us to delve into this beautiful luxury Caribbean destination. How to get to AnguillaAnguilla only has a small international airport, and you cannot fly directly to it from the UK. The quickest way to get there is by flying via Miami. Other longer ways involve flying via San Juan in Puerto Rico or Anguilla's neighbour St Maarten. If you fly into St Maarten, you can choose to either fly between the two or catch the 25 minute ferry. Best Places to Stay in AnguillaAnguilla has a range of accommodation for all budgets, but its best and largest hotels are luxury ones. In every destination that we feature at Wintasun we have ‘Chosen Ones’. These are hotels that come highly recommended either from our own experience or from feedback from customers. For Anguilla these are Cap Juluca, Zemi Beach House and the Four Seasons. All three are gorgeous luxury properties, set on beaches and with amazing restaurants and much more. Find out more about these on their own dedicated pages by clicking on the hotel name. We don’t just feature three properties on Anguilla though and we work with hundreds of suppliers to find you the best accommodation to make your holiday special. Other popular and excellent luxury hotels to check out are Quintessence Hotel and Malliouhana. Best Things to Do in AnguillaRelax on the BeachesGreat beaches are what everyone looks for when choosing where to go in the Caribbean. Anguilla is blessed with truly gorgeous beaches up and down the island. The soft, white sands look like something out of a dream and with 33 public beaches on the island, you’ll never be short of somewhere to go. Only 15,000 people live on Anguilla so you can always find a quiet spot to relax. The best of these are Shoal Bay, Meads Bay, Sandy Ground Village, Rendezvous Bay and Maundays Beach. Go Scuba DivingWith so many beaches and crystal clear waters, Anguilla is the perfect spot for Scuba Diving. There are seven marine parks around the island that make for great spots to observe the sea life. To improve the habitat these marine parks are filled with sunken ships that are now artificial reefs teeming with life. Whilst most of these ships were sunk intentionally, the best to check out is the wreck of the Sarah. This 232ft long ship is the largest off the coast of Anguilla and was sunk during a hurricane in 1984. There are many other watersports available in Anguilla including boat racing and snorkelling but the island bans jet skis to protect local sealife. Learn About Anguilla's HistoryEach island in the Caribbean has its own unique history filled with amazing stories. Find out about Anguilla’s at the only museum on the island, the Heritage Collection Museum. Here you can learn about everything from the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, the Arawaks and Taino, to the island’s geology and its role in the sugar and slave industry. Be transported back in time at Wallblake House, the oldest building on the island. It is one of the oldest plantation houses in the Caribbean. Built in 1787, you can learn more about the history of the building and those who lived here. Walking in the Fountain Cavern National Park, you can pass by the eponymous cavern, the top archaeological site on the island. Inside, petroglyphs climb the cavern walls showing its significance to the indigenous Taino, who used it as a place of worship. Experience the amazing tastes of AnguillaAnguilla has a number of amazing restaurants, many of which sit within hotels. These are still open to the general public but we recommend reserving to secure a spot at some of the island’s best eateries. Pimms in Cap Juluca is a standout. With a waterside setting, it serves up Anguillan and Caribbean classics in a romantic atmosphere. Some of Cap Juluca’s other top restaurants, Uchu and The Cap Shack, are also musts and serve up Peruvian and beach barbecue tapas respectively. For some restaurant recommendations outside of the hotels check out Ember, for stunning views and Caribbean beach cuisine prepared on a wood fired grill or oven. Sit amongst the palm trees at Veya Restaurant where live music plays as you enjoy some excellent Anguillan seafood. We hope that we have opened your eyes to what Anguilla has to offer and why you should consider it for your next Caribbean getaway.
