The low-lying Turks & Caicos islands are different to many of the other islands in the Caribbean as unlike many of these which are volcanic, the Turks & Caicos Islands are coral, more akin to the Maldives. This makes them an excellent place for scuba diving or snorkelling as the wonderfully clear waters are home to all manner of ocean life. There is also the widest blue hole in the world there, so it is a must go for divers. In this article we’ll tell you more about the islands and what makes them such a great diving spot. There are around 40 islands that make up Turks & Caicos, with 8 major islands and 6 that are inhabited. Most tourists stay on either Providenciales or Grand Turk, where the capital Cockburn Town is. There is a range of amazing accommodation here, lots of these are high end luxury properties. For some of the best hotels and resorts in the country, check out our ‘Chosen Ones’ - Amanyara, COMO Parrot Cay and Wymara Resort & Villas. There are a range of ways to explore under the sea in Turks and Caicos from scuba diving to sea scooters, subwinging, free diving, snorkelling and snuba. Each island will offer you a different diving experience too, Providenciales’ scuba is primarily wall diving – where the ocean takes a sheer drop from the shallows, whereas Grand Turk offers both wall diving and those in the shallows. Grand Turk has some of the clearest waters in the country which makes it perfect for diving and there is a plethora of ocean life from groupers, eels and lobster to larger animals such as stingrays, green turtles. Off the coast of Providenciales you can also see Nurse sharks and grey reef sharks. The islands are very well set up for divers, both experienced and beginners and there are lots of schools where you can get your PADI qualifications. If you don’t want to scuba there are plenty of snorkelling spots or discover snuba – which is an in-between. Rather than the oxygen tank being attached to your back as it is in scuba, with snuba it floats on the surface and a tube runs down to your mask, making it perfect for those who like to explore between 15-20ft. We hope that we have opened your eyes to what Turks and Caicos has to offer in terms of diving and why, if you want to go diving in the Caribbean, it is the place to go.
