Paradise is definitely the right word to describe the beautiful island of Mauritius. Known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, lush forests and coral reefs, there is much more to it than the beach holidays it is often associated with. Throughout this article we’ll be telling you all about what Mauritius has to offer so that you can consider it for your winter sun holiday. When is the best time to visit Mauritius? The temperatures in Mauritius stay at least mid twenties throughout the year, so you’re always assured of some sunshine. Being south of the equator, its seasons are opposite to ours in the UK, although Mauritius only has two proper seasons. Spring and autumn are just transition months where the rain changes and not distinct seasons. November to April is considered the summer and its the hottest yet wettest time. You can see a graph of temperature and rainfall throughout the year on our Mauritius page. June to September is winter and at this time it is colder but drier. There is more wind though. How to get to MauritiusYou can easily fly directly to Mauritius from the UK. Fly from London Heathrow with British Airways or London Gatwick with Air Mauritius. The flight time is around 12 hours. Where to stay in MauritiusThe north of Mauritius is where a lot of the tourist activity is. It is home to amazing sandy beaches such as Grand-Bay, Péreybère and Mont-Choisy and is the perfect place to stay for those looking to relax and have great facilities for water sports. One of our Chosen Ones – Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel is situated there. Other good hotels in the area include LUX Grand Gaube Resort & Villas and LUX Grand Baie Resort & Residences. This area is also nearby to the island’s capital Port Louis making it an easy choice for a day trip. The eastern coast is home to long stretches of sandy beaches and many excellent hotels. Boat days or trips to the nearby island of Ile aux Cerfs are very popular here. Ile aux Cerfs is the most popular tourist attraction in Mauritius. The leisure island is a picture perfect island paradise with white sand beaches, coconut trees and turquoise waters, it is also home to an 18 hole golf course and lots of restaurants. The other two of our Chosen Ones, Shangri La Le Touessrok and One&Only Le Saint Geran are both on the eastern coast. Staying in the south and west will offer you a completely different and unique view of the island, there are fewer hotels and many of them are much smaller. Both areas are very authentic with lots of coastal villages where locals live and work. The south is very protected and well preserved to make sure there isn’t much development. These regions are more in touch with nature and hotels here take a very sustainable approach. Things to do on MauritiusAs we’ve mentioned throughout this article so far, Mauritius has lots to offer those who like to have fun in and around the water. Coral reefs offer amazing diving experiences and plenty of coastline means a host of other water sports are available such as wind and kitesurfing in the west or northern coasts and kayaking through the mangroves in the east. We have also mentioned two of the island’s most popular attractions, the capital of Port Louis and Ile aux Cerfs. But there is much more to see, experience and explore. The village of Mahebourg in the south contains lots of history and it shows the many different colonisations that the island has seen, with lots of protected monuments throughout. Drive along the scenic route of the Petite Riviere Noire in the south, which has lots of small fishing villages with beautiful seaside vistas. Or for somewhere busier, visit Flacq on the eastern coast. This village is buzzing with life and showcases the diverse range of cultures that make up Mauritius with colourful buildings and amazing smells of food on market day. Mauritius is perfect for getting away into nature. Visit one of it's three national parks such as the Black River Gorges National Park, a lush forest home to lots scarcely seen birds and trees that also has many trails for nature lovers to explore. From the trees to the water, Blue Bay Marine Park is a protected marine park where you can see the amazing variety of sea life Mauritius has to offer either by diving or by going on a glass bottom boat! We hope that we have opened your eyes to what Mauritius has to offer and why you should consider it if you’re looking for an varied and exciting holiday or maybe just a wonderful beach getaway.
